Kevin Spacey’s name is a curse at the box office right now.

“Billionaire Boys Club” was one of the last movies Spacey filmed before he was hit with sexual misconduct allegations in 2017.

Following the accusations, the movie was moved to video on demand release on July 17. “Billionaire Boys Club” also stars Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton and Vertical Entertainment finally pulled the trigger on a limited theatre release on Friday, Aug. 17.

The movie opened in 10 theatres spread across the U.S. and made $126 in its first day and only $618 during its entire opening weekend, according to Salon.

On average, that does not even amount to seven movie tickets sold per theatre. It is by far the lowest career box office performance of Spacey’s career. The budget for the movie was $15 million.

Following the public allegations against Spacey, Vertical Entertainment addressed the difficult decision of moving forward with the film’s release.

“We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behaviour — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small, supporting role in’Billionaire Boys Club’ — does not tarnish the release of the film,” the company said.

“In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film,” Vertical Entertainment noted.

Unfortunately for the company and the other actors involved, it seems Spacey’s billing very much hurt “Billionaire Boys Club”.
