TIFF will shine the spotlight on women with the Share Her Journey Women’s Rally when the festival kicks off next month.
On Saturday, September 8, TIFF will play host to a rally with speakers including director Amma Assante, “The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Amanda Brugel and #AfterMeToo co-founder Mia Kirshner, among others.
The organization also announced a special 25th-anniversary celebration screening of Wayne Wang’s “The Joy Luck Club”, which first premiered at TIFF in 1993. The film will screen at the historic Elgin Theatre, exactly 25 days to the date of its premiere in the same theatre. Wang and cast members Kieu Chinh and Tamlyn Tomita are expected to be in attendance for the event. The film has been a topic of conversation in recent weeks with the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” — the first major Hollywood movie with an all-Asian cast since “The Joy Luck Club”.
The festival also announced a slew of new titles in the Discovery program, including “Vox Lux” starring Natalie Portman as a pop singer opposite Jude Law, “Farming” with Kate Beckinsale and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and director Neil Jordan’s new thriller “Greta” with Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert.
TIFF will kick things off with opening-night film “Outlaw King” starring Chris Pine on September 6.
