“Crazy Rich Asians” author Kevin Kwan is wanted in Singapore after being accused of avoiding the country’s compulsory military service, it’s been reported.
All Singapore men are required to serve two years of national service in the army, police, or civil defence after they turn 18. However, Kwan, 44, allegedly failed to register in 1990.
The Ministry of Defence has now issued a statement to The Straits Times: “Mr Kevin Kwan failed to register for National Service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address.
“He also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations. In 1994, his application and subsequent appeal to renounce his Singapore citizenship without serving NS were rejected.”
If convicted of draft-dodging, the writer could face up to three years in jail and a fine of around C$9,500 (S$10,000).

Kwan grew up in Singapore but left at the age of 11 to live in the U.S.
