The smash hit “Crazy Rich Asians” is getting a sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Jon M. Chu will return to helm the sequel, based on the second book in the series titled “China Rich Girlfriend” by Kevin Kwan.
Screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim are also slated to return for the adaptation.
Warner Bros. has optioned the rights to Kwan’s entire trilogy, including the third in the series “Rich People Problems”. Producer Brad Simpson said, “We have a plan with Kevin for the next two films.”
Chu will likely take on the “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel after shooting the planned adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical “In the Heights”, which is set for release in June 2020.
“Crazy Rich Asians”, the first Hollywood studio film since “The Joy Luck Club” 25 years ago to feature a predominantly Asian cast, surpassed expectations, taking in over $35 million in its first five days of release.
