Liam Payne is opening up about his split from Cheryl and says that breaking up in the public eye was like having to break up twice.
The 24-year-old singer, who officially announced his split from Cheryl in July, spoke with Kat Shoob on the Official Vodafone Big Top 40, and admitted there’s “a lot of stuff I’ve still got to sort out with my life.”
“Yeah, no I am feeling OK, I’m a bit fragile at times,” Payne said half-jokingly. “No, I’m alright, you know, it’s been OK.”
“That bit of it is difficult,” the “Strip That Down” hitmaker said in reference to the media attention surrounding the breakup. “Obviously we’ve broken up and then it was like a couple of days or a couple of weeks before we actually put the announcement out and that’s the bit when it really hits home, I guess.”
The couple released a joint statement in July announcing their “tough decision” to separate, saying that they would be focusing on taking care of their one-year-old son Bear.
“It’s like breaking up twice. We already did this once and now I’m having to go through all of that again just because…” Payne continued. “I didn’t really expect any of this obviously and it’s difficult.”
The former One Direction star said that people need to remember the real people behind those statements. “There are actually people who are going through the same sort of stuff that you go through whether they’re famous, rich or whatever they are; it doesn’t really matter.”
Last week, Payne announced that he will be releasing a new EP, titled First Time, which is expected to drop today.
