Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to break records as weekend box numbers reach $238 million domestically and $517 million globallysetting a new all-time domestic debut record.

“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves,” Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios, wrote in a statement on Sunday. “To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it – thank you, we do.”

Not only did The Force Awakens generate the biggest opening weekend of all time in Canada, it did so in Australian, New Zealand, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria and in the United Kingdom as well.

The film currently holds a solid 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Coming in far behind to take the second top spot at the box office this weekend was Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip with $14.4 million in gross revenue.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters debuted in third place with a three-day cumulative gross of $13.4 million.
