Guess who’s back? Back again.
Eminem dropped a surprise new album, Kamikaze, late Thursday night, a fiery follow-up to the critically-maligned Revival released in December 2017.
The opening track, “The Ringer”, sets the tone of the 13-track album, as an angry Slim Shady declares, “I feel like I wanna punch the world in the f***ing face right now.” He then proceeds to take shots at his critics throughout the album, including fellow rappers Drake and Tyler the Creator, and even Donald Trump.
Referring to his Trump-dissing freestyles from last year, Eminem raps, “Agent Orange just sent the Secret Service to meet in person / To see if I really think of hurtin’ him / Or ask if I’m linked to terrorists.” The Grammy-winning artist also raps of Trump: “I empathize with the people this evil serpent sold the dream to that he’s deserted.”
In the same track, Eminem insults the new wave of trap and SoundCloud rappers, saying, “Lil Pump, Lil Xan imitate Lil Wayne / I should aim at everybody in the game, pick a name.” He also attacks Lil Yachty and calls out other emcees for stealing his “choppy flow.”
One of his most savage disses comes on the track “Fall” and is aimed at Tyler the Creator, who has been vocal about how much he dislikes Em’s new music. “Tyler create nothing, I see why you called yourself a f***ot, b***h / It’s not just ’cause you lack attention, it’s ’cause you worship D12’s balls, you’re sacrilegious.”
He continues: “If you’re gonna critique me, you better at least be as good or better / Get Earl the hooded sweater, whatever his name is to help you / Put together some words, more than two letters.”
On the title track “Kamikaze”, the “Lose Yourself” hitmaker appears to take a shot at Drake, referencing the ghostwriter allegations. “You got some views, but you’re still below me / Mine are higher so when you compare views, you get overlooked / And I don’t say the hook unless I wrote the hook.”
Others Eminem disses across the album include Mike Pence, Harvey Weinstein, Joe Budden, Machine Gun Kelly, and a whole lot more.
The album is executive-produced by Dr. Dre and Eminem and features Joyner Lucas, Royce Da 5’9″, Jessie Reyez, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Additional production credits include Mike Will Made It, Illadaproducer, Ronny J, Jeremy “Backpack” Miller, Boi-1da & Jahaan Sweet, Tay Keith, Tim Suby, Fred Ball and S1 for S.K.P. Inc. The cover art pays homage to Beastie Boys’ 1986 debut album Licensed To Ill.
