Avril Lavigne sure knows how to get people excited.
Last week, Lavigne officially announced her first single in three years will be available on Sept. 19 and now she has shared a snippet of the highly anticipated track, “Head Above Water”.
The 30-second clip features shots of the ocean as she sings, “I’ve gotta keep the calm before the storm/ I don’t want less, I don’t want more/ Must bar the windows and the doors/ To keep me safe, to keep me warm.”
Lavigne also shared two monochrome photos of herself stood on the rocks of a beach while wearing a white kimono.
“I’m so excited to finally be able to announce the first single off my new album along with its release date,” she shared on her website last Thursday. “Five years have gone by since I released my last album. I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles.
“I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well,” the singer continued. “Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly. Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”
She thanked her fans for “patiently waiting as I fought through” the “battle of my lifetime.”
The new single is called “Head Above Water”, a fitting title considering Lavigne’s recent struggles: “It is the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life.
“I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning,” she recounted. “Like I was going underwater and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him.
“I have decided to be truthful about my struggle, open and more vulnerable than ever before. And to be honest, part of me doesn’t want to talk about being sick because I want it to all be behind me, but I know I have to.”
Ending on a positive note: “Let’s do this! New era!”
Last Saturday, the Canadian singer released an underwater image on Twitter with no explanation.
Immediately, fans and media outlets began arguing over what the image could be: a promotional photo or a still from Lavigne’s impending music video.
Last week, the 33-year-old wrapped up a week-long music video shoot. “I’m so passionate about this record, and my first video that will relay my story,” she shared on Instagram.

Lavigne has not released a song since 2015’s “Fly” and she has been absent from the album game for five years.
But she is gearing up for a big return, building interest and regularly teasing new music over the last year.
