Channel-flipping TV viewers who happened upon Tuesday’s edition of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” may have done a double take when they witnessed a reunion of country music’s most successful supergroup, the Highwaymen.
Consisting of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, the Highwaymen took to the “Tonight Show” stage — sort of — to perform Nelson’s iconic touring tune “On the Road Again”, with Ethan Hawke as Nelson, host Jimmy Fallon as Cash, singer-guitarist Charlie Sexton as Kristofferson and Ben Dickey (star of the Hawke directed country-music biopic “Blaze”) as Jennings.

With Hawke taking the first verse, Fallon’s Cash gave the song a couch-potato spin in verse 2, declaring that instead of being “on the road again” he’d prefer to hang out at home.
“I like stayin’ here/Life is better when I’m stayin’ here,” he sang. “Just sit at home I watch TV and have a beer/Honestly, I’d love to just stay here.”
During his interview with Fallon, Hawke recalled the time that he and his father actually met Nelson, who “offered us a hit off his joint” — an offer he now regrets passing up.
