We’ve seen Jennifer Garner in a multitude of different roles, ranging from super-spy Sydney Bristow in “Alias” to a compassionate doctor in “Dallas Buyers Club”, but her upcoming HBO role takes her to a place we’ve never seen her before: insufferably annoying.

In a new trailer for upcoming HBO comedy “Camping”, Garner plays a type-A control freak who turns a camping trip into an endurance test for her long-suffering husband (former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant) and their friends as they head into the wilderness for what was supposed to be a peaceful weekend celebration of his 45th birthday.

That’s not quite how it turns out, mainly due to the borderline insane behaviour of Garner’s character as she attempts to micro-manage ever aspect of the camping trip, driving everyone else in search of the nearest source of alcohol.

Based on a British series, “Camping” is exec produced by Lena Dunham and also stars Juliette Lewis, Ione Skye, Brett Gelman, Arturo del Puerto and Janizca Bravo.

During a session at this summer’s TV Critics Association press tour, Garner — who hasn’t appeared in a TV series since “Alias” — expressed her excitement over playing such a hilariously unhinged character.

“The writing was so much fun to say, and David can tell you that I had a really hard time saying it,” she said. “I mean, being in a scene with David and saying, ‘Do you want me to have a dysfunctional pelvic floor for the whole of your birthday weekend?’ Like, who gets to say that every single day at work?”

“Camping” debuts on Sunday, Oct. 14.
