Music icon Cher stops by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Friday for an exclusive hour-long interview and opens up about keeping her butt in shape, not being a Cher fan, and how she once chased off a mugger with Meryl Streep.
The star of “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” chats to DeGeneres about how the movie inspired her new album, Dancing Queen, a collection of ABBA covers, and admits that she doesn’t really care for Cher.
“It was such a whim kind of thing,” she says of the ABBA album. “It wasn’t serious, but then when I did it, I’m really proud of it. And I’m not a Cher fan. I’m really not.”
When DeGeneres asks what exactly the 72-year-old legend means by that, she responds, “I don’t wanna listen to it. I don’t wanna see it. I don’t wanna hear my voice.” Cher also reveals she doesn’t like watching the films she’s starred in, except for maybe “Moonstruck” or “Silkwood”, where she acted alongside Streep.
Speaking of Streep, the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer tells the story of how she and her fellow Oscar-winning friend once saved a woman from being mugged on the street while out for ice cream.
“We get around the corner and there’s this huge man… and he’s pulling at this girl,” Cher recalls. “He’s like shaking this girl. Meryl just starts screaming and takes off and I start screaming and take off and think, ‘I’m going to get killed; my friend is going to kill me.'”
“So we’re running and running and the guy turns around and he sees us and he starts running towards us. And then I thought, ‘we’re really gonna get killed.’ But we both split off in the opposite directions and we got to the girl. He had kind of like ripped her clothes, but she kept her purse, and that’s what he wanted.”
“And then, we’re like trying to fix her all up… then she looks at us and she screams and she said, ‘Oh my god I’m a singing waitress and no one’s going to believe I got mugged and saved by Meryl Streep and Cher.'”
Cher also divulges her secrets for keeping in shape, particularly her butt, which DeGeneres says was the talk of the office. “I need to know what you do,” says DeGeneres. “We want to know your butt exercises.”
The Grammy Award-winner explains her routine in detail, which involves squats and leg lifts, but she also confesses to doing Zumba. “I have a tape,” she says. When DeGeneres says she would like to see that, Cher simply responds, “No.”
Later in the show, Cher performs “SOS” from her new album Dancing Queen.
