CMT To Honour Only Women During ‘Artists Of The Year’ Show, Shining The Spotlight On Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, And More

By Alyssa Croezen.

After receiving backlash over showcasing just men during their “Artists of the Year” showcase last year, CMT have decided to shine the spotlight on country music’s standout women during this year’s show.

This year’s honourees include Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris, Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town, and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum.

“In this monumental year for women, dedicating one of the biggest nights in the genre to applaud female country artists not only solidifies our commitment, but we hope will spark a much-needed change in the industry,” said CMT senior VP Leslie Fram in a statement.

This move from CMT stems from the ongoing controversy surrounding the lack of female representation in country music on the radio.

In 2013, the TV network started the “Women of Country” campaign, with hopes that it would allow for more airplay from female artists.

Before this year’s show, CMT will showcase the women of country music over all of their platforms leading up to the annual event.
