Deaf actor, model, and activist Nyle DiMarco is calling out a recent Netflix movie for what he describes as a “terrible joke” involving a deaf person.

Taking to Twitter, the former “Dancing with the Stars” champ slammed “Sierra Burgess Is A Loser”, the new Netflix teen comedy starring “Stranger Things” fan-favourite Shannon Purser.

In a series of tweets, DiMarco was “elated” to learn that the deaf brother of one of his friends was cast in the movie — until he saw the scene.

DiMarco is referring to Cochise Zornoza, who plays the younger brother of main character Jamey (portrayed by Noah Centineo).

In the film — loosely based on Cyrano de Bergerac — Purser’s character pretends to be deaf, resulting in an awkward exchange when Zornoza’s character speaks with her in American Sign Language. Not understanding, she simply gives him a fist bump.

For DiMarco, the whole thing left a bad taste.

In a subsequent tweet, DiMarco also slammed the film for “homophobic and transphobic jokes,” noting that writing jokes about “marginalized/disenfranchised groups… makes you a lazy writer.”
