Avril Lavigne is back on the music scene.
The Canadian singer, 33, just dropped her first single in five years: “Head Above Water”.
She then performed the new track on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday:
Lavigne co-wrote the new track about her battle with Lyme disease but her powerhouse vocals mixed with a killer piano hook make the new song an instant Avril classic.
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on,” she said about the new single.
The “Sk8ter Boi” singer had been teasing the track all month long on Twitter.
“Head Above Water” is available to stream now.
