The first single and accompanying video dropped from Prince’s posthumous album Piano & A Microphone 1983, an album of sparely recorded demos the late rocker recorded early in his career, accompanying himself on piano.
The never-before-released track, “Mary Don’t You Weep”, delivers a devastating message in the video, which tackles the heavy subject of gun violence by featuring disturbing scenes of how children are affected.
“The system is broken, it’s going to take the young people to fix it this time,” a quote from the late icon reads across the screen. “We need new ideas, new life.”
With Prince’s haunting voice combined with piano in the sparse arrangement, the message comes full circle when a young black man appears to be shot in what looks like a courtroom.
Piano & A Microphone 1983 will be released on Friday, Sept. 21.
