Princess Anne Explains Why She Doesn’t Shake Hands When Greeting Commoners

It turns out Princess Anne is a stickler for tradition when it comes to meeting with the British public.

In a new clip shared by People from the upcoming documentary “Queen of the World”, Anne, the 68-year-old daughter of Queen Elizabeth, explains why she does not shake hands with members of the public when going on walkabouts.

“We never shook hands,” she says. “The theory was that you couldn’t shake hands with everybody so don’t start. So I kind of stick with that but I noticed others don’t.”

The royal walkabouts first started in the ’70s when the Queen decided she wanted to meet the British people, occasionally breaking tradition by shaking their hands.

“It’s not for me to say that it’s wrong,” Anne says, “but I think the initial concept was that it was patently absurd to start shaking hands.

“And it seems to me that it’s become a shaking-hands exercise rather than a walkabout,” she adds. “I’m glad I’m not starting that because at least you had people to talk to. Now, you don’t really.

Anne also takes aim at people using phones and other devices to snap photos when meeting her.

“Phones are bad enough, but with iPads you can’t even see their heads,” she says. “No idea who you’re talking to. I either don’t bother or just say, ‘Look, if you want to ask…I suggest you put that down. It is weird. People don’t believe they’ve experienced the event unless they’ve taken a photograph.”

“Queen of the World” premieres Oct. 1 on HBO.
