Fox Orders Pilot For ’24: Legacy’ – But Jack Won’t Be Back, Dammit!

24 could be coming back — but without Kiefer Sutherland.

Fox confirmed today at the TV Critics Association press tour that the network has ordered a pilot for reboot series 24: Legacy, which will focus on the world-saving adventures of a new CTU agent who’s not Jack Bauer.

“We’re ordering a pilot set in the world of 24,”; Fox CEO Dana Walden told reporters. “We’ve thought about doing a sequel to this for a long time. After the final event series, we saw the real time format could work in a 12-hour format. [24] exec producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto had a fantastic idea for a reboot. It’s very reminiscent of their original. Stephen Hopkins is going to direct 24: Legacy.”;

According to the network synopsis, the reboot “will revolve around a military hero’s return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back – compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.”;

“The lead is Eric Carter,”; revealed Walden. “He is clearly a significant focus of the show. There’s also a female co-lead who is a former head of CTU. It doesn’t feel like it is fully replicating the original in terms of how much Jack Bauer carried by himself, but it’s a very prominently featured lead.”;

Filming of the pilot is set to take place this winter, with a 12-episode season potentially airing next season. Casting has yet to take place.

Original star Kiefer Sutherland addressed the upcoming reboot during an interview with TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey.

“I have said from the beginning that the real star of 24 is the idea, and I mean that wholeheartedly,”; said the actor, adding that he expects some “pretty extraordinary”; things from the show.

Sutherland also says he’s not averse to reprising Jack Bauer for Legacy, although there are no plans in place for that to happen. “Whether we end up working together on it or not, I’ll be one of the first people who can’t wait to see it,” Sutherland said of the show. “I have every faith they’ll do something cool and clever.”;

Added Sutherland: “I have no idea if the [24] movie will ever happen, or Jack Bauer might end up finding his way into an episode one day and clarifying all of that, or ending all of that.”; Sutherland discusses 24 at around the 1:19 mark.
