Fan Bingbing is finally breaking her silence since disappearing from the public eye over an alleged tax evasion scandal in China.
The “Iron Man 3” actress has been silent since July and was reportedly taken into custody last month following the investigation, owing up to $128 million in back taxes and fines, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
On Wednesday, Fan, 37, finally addressed her financial troubles, apologizing to her fans and her country.
“I failed my country, which nurtured me; I failed the society, which trusted me; I failed the fans, who loved me,” she wrote in a social media post.
“I completely accept the penalties given by the taxation authorities after their thorough investigation. I totally accepted all of them, and will raise funds to pay my taxes and penalties regardless of any obstacles.”
Because this is her first offence, Fan, if she pays the taxes and penalties, can avoid criminal prosecution.
“I apologize to society and my adoring fans, as well as to my friends and family who care so much for me,” she wrote in closing.
On Thursday, it was reported that Fan was released from detention two weeks ago and permitted to return to Beijing, according to the South China Morning Post. The actress is believed to have been held in secrecy under surveillance at a holiday resort in the Jiangsu province.
