Christina Aguilera is looking back at an iconic moment in pop culture history: her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
In an interview with Andy Cohen at his SiriusXM channel, Radio Andy, the “Liberation” singer, 37, recalled what a “whirlwind” experience her smooch at the VMAs was.
Back in 2003, after a performing “Like A Virgin” with both Madonna and Britney Spears, the trio ended the with Madonna giving each of them a steamy kiss — which remains one of the most iconic moments in VMAs history.
“It was weird,” she confessed before explaining that Spears’ kiss with the ’80s icon was overshadowed by her recent breakup with Justin Timberlake when the camera cut to Timberlake in the audience, causing viewers to miss Madonna’s kiss with Xtina.
“They cut away to get Justin’s reaction,” she recalled. “It was a cheap shot.”
Aguilera says she knew that event was going to make headlines, she just wasn’t part of it. “I saw the newspaper the next day and I was like, ‘Oh, well, I guess I got left out of that one.’”
She added, “Everything happened so quickly back then, everything was a whirlwind, I think I was on tour at the time. But I had my own performance that night, it was ‘Fighter’ with Dave Navarro… it was a kick-ass performance so I was okay with that… she could have the kiss.”
Later, Aguilera also chatted with Cohen about her time on the “Mickey Mouse Club”, watch the interview above.
