There is something very peculiar about one character in director Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria” remake.
An actor by the name of Lutz Ebersdorf is credited for playing 82-year-old psychoanalyst Dr. Jozef Klemperer in the horror movie, but it was all a ruse. Klemperer was actually played by Tilda Swinton.
The actress starred as Madame Blanc in the film but slipped into makeup and prosthetics to play the psychoanalyst.
“The intention was never to fool anybody,” Swinton said in a new piece by The New York Times. “The genius of [makeup artist] Mark Coulier notwithstanding, it was always our design that there would be something unresolved about the identity of the performance of Klemperer.”
And Coulier, an Oscar-winning makeup artist, went to great lengths — figuratively and literally — to pull it off.
“She did have us make a penis and b**ls,” Coulier said. “She had this nice, weighty set of genitalia so that she could feel it dangling between her legs, and she managed to get it out on set on a couple of occasions.”
Coulier isn’t sure where the prosthetics are now: “Probably in a box somewhere!” he said, smiling. “I should try and find it, and put it on a plaque on the wall of my workshop.”
“Suspiria” also stars Dakota Johnson and creeps its way into theatres on Oct. 26.
