Elle King opens up about her “destructive” marriage to Andrew Ferguson as she chats with People magazine in a new interview.
The 29-year-old, who wed Ferguson secretly just three weeks after meeting him in a bar, announced her split last May, with her confirming the marriage in the same post. The pair have since managed to reconcile their romance, with King sharing loved-up snaps on Instagram.
The “Ex’s & Oh’s” star admits in the candid interview: “Last year almost broke me, but I’m stronger now because of it.”
The musician, who has battled PTSD and depression post-split, says she partied hard to deal with the “numb emotions she couldn’t handle at the time,” admitting she drank and did drugs.
However, she insists she now realizes “it was just prolonging the inevitable of dealing with them [the emotions]. And what you have to do, unfortunately, is just feel them, and that sucks.
“I thought that by doing drugs it would buy me time to feeling better. And when that wasn’t working, I just realized I was in this other cycle, and that I was creating it myself. And I realized I needed to cut all the darkness out of my life.”
She says of getting help, “If I didn’t get help, I probably wouldn’t be… I don’t know. I don’t wanna think like that. I think that reaching out saved my life. I don’t wanna think of any other outcome that could have happened. I feel like the more I talk about it, maybe it could reach somebody … reach somebody that feels alone.”
King also confesses that she had “started to lose her mind” before she met Ferguson, who was accused of grabbing King by the throat and threatening to kill her just weeks before the couple confirmed the split.
TMZ made the claims, insisting Ferguson had been arrested and charged with felony domestic violence. The charges were later dropped.
King adds of the relationship, “I was just searching for any kind of connection and realness… just f**king begging for love.
“I was in a destructive marriage. I was at the lowest point in my life. I was not well. I couldn’t look people in the eyes. I literally couldn’t leave my house for weeks at a time.”
