The Impossible star Naomi Watts looks statuesque in her emerald green ruffled dress in front of a floral backdrop on the February cover of Vogue Australia. The actress dishes on her emotionally extreme role in her new film, what it was like taking on the role of Princess Di and her thoughts on award buzz.
“The pressure of The Impossible was huge because it is such a sensitive subject and needs to be told with a lot of truth,”; Naomi tells the mag. She goes on to explain that the biggest challenge of the film was to keep it from turning into a “disaster movie”; without a soul. “It was definitely hard work… I mean we were in that pool, struggling to breathe,” she adds. “Of course, nothing to the extent of what the real people went through, but nonetheless… I’m not even a strong swimmer.”;
And on the topic of taking on high pressure roles, Naomi’s latest project is exactly that, she’s taking on the iconic Princess Diana and the actress says that she feared the “monumental comparisons”; would be her downfall: “In the case of Diana, of course there is a huge pressure to look right, to have good hair, to walk and speak like her. And I instantly thought: “Oh no, I’m going to fail at that because the comparisons are going to be monumental.”;
Being in the public eye herself, the actress was able to empathize with the situation Princess Diana was in. “Most of the time I go completely under the radar, but I do understand the pressure and how awful it must have been for her,”; but adds, “She was properly isolated because of the media attention and, as a result, paranoid. She didn’t know who to trust and that is horrible.”;
Naomi’s role in The Impossible has garnered her a Golden Globe award nomination and many are saying the actress will nab the Oscar nom as well. But she keeps it modest in the magazine saying, “Of course it’s nice to hear all that, but one doesn’t want to get too carried away with the buzz. It’s going to ether be a happy ending or a disappointment.”;
