Dame Helen Mirren posed for a cheeky photo in the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, clearly a reference to her role in the upcoming Disney film “The Nutcracker And The Four Realms”.
In the accompanying article, Mirren opens up about her character Mother Ginger and the desire to explore her dark side. “She’s fabulous and funny, and becomes bitter and angry,” the 73-year-old actress reveals. “Women get to play much cooler villains these days. But I’ve always had a secret ambition to play a villain in a James Bond movie.”
Although it may appear that the Oscar winner is ready and willing to embrace any challenge, she admits she’s a self-proclaimed “scaredy cat.” “I’m constantly nervous. I’m always worried that I’m not going to do it right. But you have to just jump and then the adrenaline kicks in.” This includes taking on the role of Catherine The Great in a new HBO limited series currently filming in Lithuania. “It’s a big responsibility,” she explains. “She’s not an easy character to find.”
Mirren also touched on her relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. “I love her. I’m not a royalist; I’m a Queenist,” she proclaims. As for the rest of the House of Windsor? “I don’t care that much, though I do watch ‘The Crown’. I just think it’s beautifully realized.”
