New Zealand is mysteriously vanishing from world maps — is it due to a vast conspiracy involving British pop idol (and wannabe Kiwi) Ed Sheeran?
That’s the notion proffered by quasi-crazed conspiracy theorist and former “Flight of the Conchords” star Rhys Darby in a new commercial touting New Zealand tourism.
In the hilarious ad spot (above), the unhinged comedian is completely stymied as to why the island nation is vanishing from the world’s maps until he connects the dots to arrive at the dubious theory that Sheeran “loves it here in New Zealand. He wants citizenship. But here’s the clincher: he wants it all for himself.”

As you may have guessed, the cunning plot that Darby espouses to New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern — who makes a cameo — isn’t quite on the money, as pointed out by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, who also appears, with a sly Middle Earth reference that will surely amuse “Lord of the Rings” fans.
The commercial is part of the New Zealand #GetNZontheMap tourism campaign that kicked off back in May following another video that featured Darby and Ardern. Watch:
