Famed fashion model and widow of the late David Bowie, Iman is featured on the cover of the latest edition of PORTEREdit, Net-a-Porter’s weekly digital magazine. In the accompanying article, she opens up about why she will never get remarried.
“I will never remarry,” says the 63-year-old supermodel. “I mentioned my husband the other day with someone, and they said to me: ‘You mean your late husband?’ I said, ‘No, he is always going to be my husband.’”
She admits, however: “I do feel very lonely. But do I want a relationship? I can’t say never, but no, not now.”
Despite living in the public eye for decades, Iman reveals that Bowie’s death from liver cancer in 2016 placed her in the spotlight in a way she has never experienced.
“People take pictures of me in the street, and say [as she touches the interviewer’s arm]: ‘I am so sorry for your loss.’ I’m like, ‘Don’t touch me. You just took pictures of me, how can you be sorry?'”
“I get the fans’ grief but it’s not the same,” she adds. “They have lost someone they look up to; we have lost a husband and a father. And sometimes, I don’t want people to know how sad I am. People say to me: ‘Oh, you’re so strong.’ I’m not strong — I am just trying to keep it together.”
Her priority right now, she explains, is to protect her 18-year-old daughter, Alexandria, from being used by modelling agents who just want to capitalize on the memory of her famous father.
“Every agency, every designer, called me to say: ‘If she wants to, we’d love for her to model for us.’ I said: ‘No, she doesn’t.’ I know why they wanted her to model — it’s because she is David Bowie’s daughter.”
