Halsey’s known for her story-telling in music videos and the visual for her new single “Without Me” was nothing short of heartbreaking.
In the Colin Tilley-directed video, which dropped on Oct. 29, Halsey can be seen battling a toxic relationship. It’s hard not to notice that the actor playing her boyfriend looks very similar to her ex, G-Eazy.
The visual starts with the couple taking shots at a bar and quickly moves through a montage of Halsey comforting her boyfriend as he vomits in the bathroom, celebrations around a campfire, heated arguments and then sadly, a moment of physical abuse.
The video ends with her abusive partner getting taken away by the police, while she’s left standing alone feeling empowered.
The 24-year-old took to Instagram to share the meaning behind the video’s powerful message.
“The story is a reflection of a combination of relationships I’ve been in, or watched the people I love go through. It’s a reminder that you deserve more and that it’s okay not to be taken advantage of by your partners, your friends, your family,” she explains. “You deserve happiness. Don’t be afraid of going and finding it.”
Recently, the Grammy-nominated singer opened up about the writing process behind her new song, telling Beats 1 host Zane Lowe that penning the track led to her initial break-up with the “No Limit” rapper.
“I listened to what I wrote and went ‘Oh my God, is that how I feel? If that’s how I feel I need to put the pause on this thing right now’. I’m obviously talking about my relationship,” she said. “So the song happened first. And it was, just like, this moment of like sincerity.”
