Fans of Kerry Washington did a double take on Monday when the former “Scandal” star appeared on NBC’s “Today” show and revealed she had one more child than believed.
It all started when “Today” co-anchor Craig Melvin introduced the 41-year-old actress as “the mother of two.”
“I am a mother of three,” Washington corrected. However, she and husband Nnamdi Asomugha only have two children, son Caleb Kelechi, 2, and daughter Isabelle Amarachi, 4.
Former HLN commentator Holland Reid was among those surprised to learn that Washington had somehow acquired an extra child without anyone noticing, and tweeted her shock.
There is, however, a rational explanation: Washington’s husband has a 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, and Washington was including her among her children.
During her chat with Melvin, Washington discussed “American Son”, the play in which she’s currently starring alongside Steven Pasquale (“Rescue Me”), playing a couple who search for their missing son.
“The play is teaching me so much every day. I feel like I’m still learning from [my character]. One of the things that I think every mother who sits in the play — every parent, actually, who comes to the play — is faced with the powerlessness of parenting,” she explained.
“That there was a time where you could control everything, kind of, about them in the very beginning,” Washington continued. “But parenting is a lot about letting go and how you do that with grace and ease and empower your kids to make the right choices.
“[Parenting] is an adventure. And obviously, doing that as a parent of an African-American kid has particular challenges.”
