Some fans of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise have yet to give up hope that the series’ director might come back.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, a campaign to get director James Gunn rehired to helm “Guardians 3” have crowdfunded $4,000 for a billboard only a few miles from Disneyland in California, urging Disney to rehire him.
“We really love Gunn as both a creator and the man we’ve seen him mature into,” 29-year-old Giuseppe Cincinnato told THR about spearheading the campaign. “Even if this wasn’t going to cause Disney to see their mistake, we could at least show James Gunn how much support he has in his corner of the galaxy.”
Gunn was fired from the franchise earlier this year after old deleted tweets emerged in which he made jokes about rape and pedophilia. Members of the cast attempted to have the firing reversed but ultimately Disney and Marvel maintained their decision.
The billboard will stay up until Nov. 25, though the group behind the campaign hope to raise enough money for a more expensive one to go up before Christmas.
At the moment, “Guardians 3” remains on hold, while Gunn has since been hired by Warner Bros. to helm a new take on “Suicide Squad”.
