Julia Roberts sat down with her good pal Gwyneth Paltrow on the latest episode of the goop podcast to talk about marriage, raising children, and her new Amazon drama series, “Homecoming”.
The 51-year-old movie star talked about meeting her husband Danny Moder and how that was the first “seismic shift” in her life. “That was the first time my life will never be the same in the most incredible, indescribable way,” she said.
“He truly, to this day, to this minute, is just my favourite human. I’m more interested in what he has to say or his point of view just than anybody. Really, we’re so lucky in that way. We just really, really like each other and we just enjoy each other’s company.”
Roberts and Moder met on the set of her film “The Mexican” in 2000; Moder was working as an assistant camera operator at the time. The pair wed in July 2002 and have three children together: twins Hazel (13) and Phinnaeus (13) and son Henry (11).
“It just gets deeper, it just gets more complex,” Roberts said of her 16-year marriage. She opened up about the small worries you have after tying the knot — like wondering if you’ll like the same couch or patterned towels — to the bigger concerns, like, “Will you parent in a way that has balance to it, that holds hands in philosophy.
“You just don’t know these things until you are right there doing it and we are so fortunate that there is some kind of explicable harmony to the way we do things.”
When Paltrow asked how she balances work and raising her kids, Roberts gave a very honest answer. “Sometimes it’s smooth as silk,” she said. “And sometimes you feel like you’re just hitting all the branches on the way down.”
The Oscar-winning actress is not slowing down when it comes to her career: She will make her TV debut on November 2 in “Homecoming”, a psychological thriller directed by Sam Esmail.
“It’s genius, he is so fantastic,” Roberts said of working with the “Mr. Robot” director. “But can I tell you, it’s his absolutely surgical detail. I’m talking about centimetres of a camera frame. I’m talking about everything is so considered. He is the happiest person on the set.”
