Ridley Scott has his eye on a “Gladiator” sequel.
The Oscar-winning director of the 2000 film has begun the process of bringing “Gladiator 2” to life with Paramount, according to reports.
The original film, starring Russell Crowe, went to earn 11 Oscar nominations and five wins. The storyline will reportedly pick up after the death of Crowe’s character, Maximus, focusing on the story of Lucius, the now-grown son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen).
In “Gladiator”, Lucius was also related to the film’s villain, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius. Before Maximus died, he saved the lives of Lucius and Lucilla, which will have left a strong impression on him.
Sources told Deadline that Scott will direct while Peter Craig (“The Town” and two “Hunger Games” flims) will pen the script.
Scott is currently focused on directing his first-ever TV series, “Raised By Wolves”. He is also working with Scarlett Johansson for a drama about photojournalist Lyndsey Addario and a potential film about the wizard Merlin with Disney.
As of now, there is no potential release date for “Gladiator 2”.
