Rebel Wilson sparked debate online this week after claiming in an interview with the Huffington Post that her new film “Isn’t It Romantic” has made her “the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy.”
A Twitter user saw the quote and quickly pushed back on the statement, noting that Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique have both starred in rom-coms.
Amazingly, Wilson saw the tweet and responded, defending her claim.
Meanwhile, on Twitter, the exchange got users pointing out how incorrect Wilson was.
Another Twitter user who begged to differ was Mo’Nique, star of the 2006 rom-com “Phat Girlz”, and she issued a gentle reminder that one should “know the history” before making claims.
Wilson responded, writing that “it was never my intention to erase anyone else’s achievements and I adore you and Queen Latidah so much… I support all plus size ladies and everything positive we are doing together.”
Wilson took things even further on Monday, issuing an apology in a trio of tweets in which she admits she “neglected to show the proper respect to those who climbed this mountain before me like Mo’Nique, Queen Latifah, Melissa McCarthy, Ricki Lake and likely many others.”
Adding that she has come to realize that “what I said was not only wrong but also incredibly hurtful,” she concludes by saying, “I am deeply sorry.”
