“Shrek” and “Puss in Boots” are headed back to movie screens.
According to Variety, Universal Pictures has placed “Despicable Me” producer Chris Meledandri in charge of rebooting the “Shrek” series and its spin-off “Puss in Boots”.
Meledandri isn’t planning a completely fresh reboot though, telling Variety that he would like to bring back the original voice cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas.
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” Meledandri said. “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
The producer is still working to get the story right for the new entries in the “Shrek” universe.
“There’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world, but it’s a high bar to find a story that’s truly world,” he said. “You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure.”
Twitter users responded to the news of the reboots with a mixture of excitement, dread and, of course, plenty of jokes.
