Idris Elba has acted in blockbuster movies, walked the world’s biggest red carpets and even DJ’d a Royal Wedding, but the hardest thing he ever did was away from the public eye.
People‘s Sexiest Man Alive 2018 opened up about the incredible stress he felt when proposing to Sabrina Dhowre. Elba said bending the knee for his model fiancée “was the most nerve-wracking thing for me ever.”
“But in terms of wanting to make someone feel super special and feel my love, that was pretty romantic for me,” the actor told the publication.
Elba, 46, originally planned to pop the question on Valentine’s Day “but that was going to be problematic.”
He instead proposed during a screening of his movie “Yardie”. “It was a little spontaneous if I’m honest,” he said. “I was at a cast and crew screening and among people I loved. We had all worked so hard for this project so I was like I’m doing it right now, here, today.”
“I didn’t expect it to quite make British news and American news and Japanese news, for that matter,” Elba laughed. “It was quite a public affair. But it really wasn’t meant to be on the news.”
The actor proposed to Dhowre on Feb. 10.
