After his 50th birthday party guestlist raised eyebrows, Hugh Jackman is defending his friendship with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.
“I’ve known those guys for 15 years and we don’t talk politics at birthday parties,” he explained to Variety shortly after his party. “The Front Runner” actor publicly supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 U.S. election, though, as a foreign citizen did not vote in the election: “I’m an Aussie, so I don’t get to vote, but if you can, you should vote.”
Now, in an interview with Howard Stern on Monday, Jackman further explained why he’s remained pals with the controversial political couple who are official advisers to Donald Trump.
“They’re great friends. They’re unbelievably loyal,” he says. “We’re great friends and I want to say to people…’So, if you’re friends of 15 years’ dad became president, do you dump them as a friend? Really?'”
Politics aside, to Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness, Trump and Kushner are “good people.” The Aussie couple has stepped out in support of their political pals over the years, posing for photos together at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Enduring Vision benefit in 2010, attending the opening of her fine jewellery boutique in 2011 and posting pics of his friends on Twitter.
“I do value loyalty. They’ve been unbelievably loyal to me,” he adds. They’re good people and I would hate to think that at 50 years of age, [I] can’t say to people these are my friends and I’m not gonna dump them,” alluding that they don’t always see eye-to-eye. “Even if I disagree with some of the stuff people do – all of us have friends we disagree with the stuff they do.”
It seems not all of “Wolverine” star’s fans agree with his choice of friends. After news the pair attended his birthday bash earlier this month, fans flooded Twitter with their displeasure.
Jackman did have a defender or two amid the outpouring of negativity.
