Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell have joined forces to deliver a knockout with “Creed II” song “The Mantra”.
The track, produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, will feature on the upcoming sequel’s soundtrack, which is set for release on November 21, the same day the movie hits theatres.
Mike WiLL Made-It is handling executive producer duties on the soundtrack, which will also include Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Bon Iver, A$AP Rocky, and Nas. Earlier this month, the super-producer dropped the album’s first track, “Kill ‘Em With Success”, featuring Schoolboy Q, 2 Chainz and Eearz.
“The Mantra” brings a more chilled vibe than the aggression on “Kill ‘Em With Success”. Pharrell carries the majority of the track, delivering a smooth verse and addictive chorus before Lamar switches things up with a rapid-fire verse of impressive wordplay and incredible flows.
“Creed II” is a sequel to 2015’s “Creed” — a spinoff of the “Rocky” films — starring Michael B. Jordan as light heavyweight boxer Adonis “Creed” Johnson. The first movie was a huge success and earned Sylvester Stallone a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards.
The sequel will see Creed, under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa, facing off against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago, whom Rocky fought in “Rocky IV”.
