Alessia Cara took over hosting duties on Zane Lowe’s “World Record” show on Apple Music’s Beats 1 on Monday, sharing songs from her new album and more.

The 22-year-old Canadian started things off with Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” and then followed that up with her own song “Growing Pains” off her new album The Pains of Growing.

“That song was actually the first song I wrote for this album, which is basically about growth and change and all the different aspects of all of those things,” she explained. “Yeah, I think we all grow up, we’re always growing but we never fully grow, which is, I think, kind of a good thing, kind of a cool part of life.”

Cara also gave a shoutout to Toronto band the Beaches, playing their song “Fascination”.

“It’s a girl band from Toronto, and how much more amazing does that get?” she said. “I’m actually from Toronto, too, so I feel a close relationship with these girls even though I’ve never met them.”

Later in the show, Cara played another one of her new songs, “Not Today”, and talked about the song’s creation.

“It’s kind of about a miserable time in my life, if I’m not going to lie,” she said. “I actually wrote this one in my house, in, like, a bathroom, like a tiny, tiny bathroom in my house, in the pitch-black dark with my guitar. When I originally wrote it, it sounded like a blues song or like I should have a piece of straw in my mouth when I sing it. But we revamped it. Sounds a little bit more hopeful now, and hopefully, it gives you guys some hope to get out of that dark space as well.”
