Jimmy Fallon got up close and personal with a baby porcupine on Thursday’s edition of “The Tonight Show” and things got a little too close for comfort.
“Animal Planet” host Robert Irwin, son of the late Steve Irwin, returned to “The Tonight Show” with a heap of adorable animals, including baby otters, a young zebra, and a giant aardvark.
However, the definite show-stealers were the two baby porcupines, Quill Smith and Quillie Nelson.
“Those spines there, that’s their defence mechanism; if a predator is going to get them, they’ll sink them right down into their skin,” Irwin explained as one of the spiky African rodents crawled onto Fallon’s lap.
“I’m just happy I had kids when I could,” a nervous Fallon quipped. Things got even more nerve-racking for the late-night host when he dropped a piece of sweet potato, meant for the porcupine, onto his crotch.
To Fallon’s credit, he held his nerve a lot better than comedian Kevin Hart, who freaked out the last time Irwin was on “The Tonight Show” when he brought with him a bunch of snakes and spiders.
The video of Hart’s meltdown went viral and racked up over 100 million views on Facebook alone.
