Alec Baldwin is revealing that he may have been one of the targets of Cesar Sayoc, the devoted Donald Trump fan who attempted to Make America Great Again by mailing pipe bombs to perceived opponents of the current Commander in Chief, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, former veep Joe Biden, actor Robert De Niro, CNN’s New York studios and several others.
Speaking with the Toronto Star, the 60-year-old actor revealed no less an authority than the Federal Bureau of Investigation told him that, had Sayoc not been apprehended, he may have also been sent a pipe bomb.
“The FBI came to my home and told me that my wife and I were some of the people that this guy searched on his computer,” the former “30 Rock” actor told the Star. “He had researched several people he viewed as opponents of Trump. They sat me down at my home and it was very disconcerting because I have young kids.”
As Baldwin admits, he hadn’t really been worried that his opposition to the president and his policies — to say nothing of regularly lampooning POTUS on “Saturday Night Live” — would put him and his family at risk.
“Up to this point I wasn’t really concerned about the safety issue,” adds Baldwin, who shares four young children with wife Hilaria Baldwin.
“But the only thing more dangerous than Trump are some of the Trump supporters,” he continues. “I make no secret that I’m totally opposed to Trump. It’s the low point of the American experience. If you want to hurt your enemy and want to destabilize them, what would be better than installing the worst possible leader of that country imaginable?”
When asked about what security measures he has undertaken since the FBI’s visit, Baldwin is keeping that information to himself. “You can understand the answer to that question is rather private,” he responds. “But you can guess what we’ve had to do.”
Sayoc, 56, has entered a not guilty plea to 30 charges that could see him spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Despite the hatred directed at him from Trump supporters, Baldwin is not diminishing his criticism of America’s 45th president. In fact, a recent tweet from the “Match Game” host describes Trump to a “National Socialist tumour,” referencing Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers’ Party.
