The White House has released a video of first lady Melania Trump showing off this year’s Christmas decorations.
Fitting this year’s decor theme “American Treasures”, the one-minute video shows Trump clad in all-black strolling through an ominous sea of pointed, blood-red cone-shaped trees, touching various ornaments displaying miniature U.S. landmarks, and looking at blue-and-gold trees.
Another tree that catches Trump’s eyes is red-themed and features glass soccer balls and skateboards, ornaments displaying the first lady’s anti-cyberbullying campaign slogan, “Be Best”, and for some reason, a wreath made of sharpened “Be Best” pencils.
A bowl of artichokes, figs, and tomatoes are also on display.
This year’s theme is a little warmer than last year’s “dead branches and barren landscape” look that had Twitter users comparing it to “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Shining”.
But if Trump thought this year’s decorations would escape ridicule, she’s wrong. Users were quick to draw comparisons to everything from “The Handmaid’s Tale” to “The Shining”, again.
The First Lady defended her choice of decor when speaking at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia on Wednesday. “We are in the 21st Century and everybody has a different taste,” she said. “I think they look fantastic. I hope everybody will come over and visit it. In real life, they look even more beautiful. You are all welcome to visit the White House, the people’s house.”
Her statement can be heard in a video obtained by Reuters and recorded during her appearance as part of her anti-opioid addiction and cyberbullying initiative Be Best initiative.
