When Zendaya headed out to celebrate the Grammys earlier this month, the 19-year-old Disney star set Twitter buzzing for two reasons.
Setting aside talk of her risk-taking mullet, the singer had fans starting relationship rumours after posing alongside New York Giant Odell Beckham Jr. at several after-parties.
Talk of a romance between the young stars, however, was quickly shut down by Zendaya’s father who told TMZ, “what relationship? We’re just friends. If you see my daughter out on a date without me, it’s a relationship. It’s like an audition… it’s an interview.”

Now, in a new interview with 92.3 Amp, the Covergirl elaborates on the status of her relationship with the NFL star. “First of all it wasn’t really a date. We went to some events together, because we’re friends. We were with a group, we were with multiple people – I was with my stylist and everything like that,” she explained. “But here’s the thing: Even if it does progress, you gotta go through my dad first.”
She added, “Just because you’re in the NFL, you killin’ stuff… that doesn’t mean you get to skip past pops. He’s not going to allow that to happen. Plus, if you have TMZ Paparazzi people hanging out waiting, then I think my dad should be there. That’s protective, I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
Zendaya capped the topic of conversation by echoing her father’s initial statement, telling DJ Toro, “he’s auditioning.”
