Michael Sheen apparently explained how Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidential victory had a direct impact on his relationship with ex Sarah Silverman.
Sheen, 49, and Silverman, 47, dated for four years before splitting in 2017; the actor spoke about the breakup to the Telegraph in a new interview. Blaming long distance for the split, the actor reportedly said the pair both wanted to “get more involved” in politics after Brexit and Trump’s presidency had such a major impact on the world.
Sheen, who previously dated and has a 19-year-old daughter with Kate Beckinsale, shared, “That led to her doing her show ‘I Love You America’ [in which Silverman interviews people from across the political spectrum], and it led to me wanting to address the issues that I thought led some people to vote the way they did about Brexit in the area I come from and others like it.”
He added, according to the Daily Mail: “I felt a responsibility to do something but it did mean coming back here, which was difficult for us because we were very important to each other. We both acknowledge that each of us had to do what we needed to do.”
That is what the Telegraph wrote, but that is not how Sheen feels. He shunned the publication for twisting his words in a tweet published Saturday.
“Brexit broke up my relationship? What utter bollocks!” he wrote. “And how unbelievably dishonest of [the] Telegraph to knowingly make it seem like I said that for their bulls**t headline. Shame on you.”
Silverman was also quizzed on the relationship while chatting with Jimmy Kimmel, whom she once dated for seven years, on his show last year.
The actress explained at the time, “I was with Michael [Sheen]. We broke up over Christmas. As you know, he moved back to the UK and his life is really there and my life is really not there.”
