Adam Levine faced an online backlash from “The Voice” fans Tuesday after he was accused of throwing his own contestant under the bus.
Levine, 39, urged viewers to vote for Reagan Strange over DeAndre Nico, despite her not being able to perform because she was sick.
Both hopefuls ended up in the bottom three, but only one got the chance to make it through to the semi-finals; that one being Strange. That meant both Nico and Dave Fenley were both eliminated.
Levine said on the show, “There is an unbelievably talented little girl right now who is not able to fight for her position on this show.
“The thought of breaking her heart by not urging everyone to give this girl a shot to go and redeem herself next week would be too far beneath me.”
The Maroon 5 frontman also pointed out that this was not the first time Nico had been in the bottom three, Just Jared reported.
Levine told Nico, “I want you to know I love you. I appreciate what you did here tonight. Honestly, I think you should both be there.”
He then added, “I gotta fight for my girl. I’ve gotta make sure that I represent her properly in this moment because she didn’t have a chance to use her voice tonight, so I’m gonna use it for her as well as I possibly can to make sure she can make it next week.”
Fans were left furious over Levine’s decision. See some of the online reaction below:
