In the latest issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, Oprah Winfrey is declaring 2019 “the year of coming together.”
The year-long theme will celebrate people unite to solve problems in their communities and share their passions as well as highlight the importance of respecting each other as human beings, despite being at odds in their political leanings.
“I firmly believe that coming together – whether by drawing loved ones closer or setting aside differences with people who don’t see things as we do – makes us better, kinder, stronger human beings,” Winfrey says in the January issue of O. “We must find a way to come together. Both sides – all sides – must stop attacking and maligning. Our goal must be decency and respect for every human we encounter.”
For Winfrey, the most important takeaway of the year of coming together is knowing that small, personal acts can make a huge difference, especially in a world where we are “saturated in negativity.”
“It only takes one candle to light a whole room of darkness,” she says. “People think, ‘Oh, I have no power to change the world.’ But we are the world, through our families, our work, our communities. And how you treat every person in your world has an impact on the macrocosm. Don’t underestimate your power. Hate is potent, but so is kindness. And goodness, and grace. Use yours generously.”
The mega-star is calling for major change in 2019, urging her fellow American to drop the hate.
“Let’s be more discerning about what’s really happening to our country. I know for sure: With hatred, no side wins. In the end, we all lose,” she concludes.
The January issue of O, The Oprah Magazine hits newsstands Dec. 11.
