“Game of Thrones” viewers have been warned countless times that “winter is coming,” but in the first trailer for the upcoming eighth and final season, winter is finally here.
In the trailer, which made its debut at the Sao Paulo Expo in Brazil, a cold wind is seen whipping across an icy landscape, which is revealed to be the three-dimensional “map” of Westeros seen in the show’s iconic opening.
The freezing wind comes across a statue of the Lannister lion, which quickly becomes covered in ice. Next, the wind greets a statue of a Targaryen dragon, which also freezes.
Then, flames burst out on the other side of Westeros, with the flames rapidly moving northward as the ice moves south until these two opposing forces meet in an explosive visual nod to the ice-vs.-fire battle that promises to consume the upcoming swan song season.
“Game of Thrones” will return in April 2019.
