On the same day she released her first mainstream pop single since 2006, former Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams has announced her split from fiancé Chad Johnson.
The 38-year-old singer met Johnson, a 40-year-old pastor and pro sports chaplain, at a spiritual retreat in Arizona in March 2017. Williams previously told People magazine that she was in a “horrible, dark place” when the two first met and was looking for “hope and restoration.”
A year later, the pair got engaged, with Johnson popping the question back in March 2018 while on vacation in Pebble Beach, Calif.
However, on Friday morning, Williams shared an Instagram Story announcing her breakup with Johnson, confirming that the engagement is off.
“I still remain fearless,” she wrote. “I guess I still remain single! Things didn’t work out. The healing that needs to take place is a must! I don’t wanna destroy another relationship. Blessings to him, his family and ministry. #FEARLESS”
Earlier in the day, Williams dropped her first pop single in over a decade, titled “Fearless”, an empowering anthem about not letting fears hold you back.
Williams has been open in the past about her struggles with depression and anxiety.
Johnson has yet to speak publicly about the breakup.
