Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have shared their difficult journey to parenthood, with the pair opening up to Oprah Winfrey in a candid new interview.
Union, 46, and Wade, 36, welcomed their first daughter, Kaavia James, who was born via surrogate, in November.
The actress, who had suffered 9 miscarriages, explained: “Did I miss, did I fail in some kind of way? Did I… am I defective in some kind of deep, you know, just – am I defective in some kind of way? Am I less than in some kind of way? Am I less worthy in some kind of way?”
Union added when asked about the advice she wanted to give others going through the same thing: “Hope, knowledge, a sense of community that doesn’t always feel like it exists when you’re in it. You are not alone, there’s many paths to parenthood.”
She told Winfrey: “So many people are suffering in silence and every time, when we’re candid and transparent about our journeys, no matter what those journeys are, you are allowing people to be seen and heard and empowered in ways that they’ve never been.”
Recalling how the couple had to eventually decide to take another route to pregnancy after enduring numerous surgeries, Wade shared: “I had to step in and be like ‘Baby, it’s me and you, I want to grow old with you. And I want our miracle baby, but I want you.'”
Union and Wade’s interview also saw the showbiz duo respond to the social media backlash they received after the actress shared a photo wearing a hospital gown after the baby’s birth.
