Diane Kruger knows what it’s like to always be on the move.

Born in a small village in Germany, Kruger won an Elite modeling contest at age 16 which led her to travel the world and walk for designers like, Chanel, Armani and Yves Saint Laurent.

Along the way, she met Karl Lagerfeld and the two became good friends. In an interview with Net-A-Porter’s The Edit, Kruger describes him as “funny and cynical, very educated, very cultivated.”; Despite their busy lives, the two remain in close contact, texting photos to one another of their cats.

Now an actress, the former model has recently moved to New York City after living between Paris and Vancouver with her beau Joshua Jackson. “[Moving here] was a major commitment. That’s a big step into adulthood for me, to allow that time for someone else out of my time,” she reveals.

Kruger’s acting career really took off when she was cast as Helen in the 2004 breakout film “Troy”;. She was later cast in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film “Inglourious Basterds”;, and hasn’t looked back since.

While Kruger has seen much success, the actress admits she’s a bit of a loner, which doesn’t help her working in such a competitive industry. “I’m a loner,” she says. “I think it has held me back in my life quite a bit. I’m socially awkward with people in a bigger group. People often say they think I’m cold or standoffish, but I’m just not a good schmoozer at all. And that’s not good in my job – because, obviously, it is a big requirement.”

With an approaching 40th birthday, Kruger also dishes to the weekly digital magazine about the self-awareness that comes with age. She says, “I didn’t have a great private life until recently; I was always looking for the next thing. But when I turned 30, I realized I was being an idiot. I was living this accomplished life: I speak three languages, I’ve traveled the world, made good money. I realized that I really don’t know anything about what is going on in the world around me – and [I was] not so great about [knowing] myself, either.” She admits, “Now I’m not too self-centred!”

Despite just moving the NYC, Kruger is already contemplating her next move. “I feel very European and I think that I’m going to grow old in Paris. I have this fantasy of raising my kids there one day,” she reveals. “I just can’t imagine living my life sipping cocktails at the Chateau Marmont, you know?”
