Dave Chappelle doesn’t think he, himself, would be a good fit to host the Oscars.
The comedian appeared on CNN’s New Year’s Eve special on Monday night and was asked about the controversy surrounding Kevin Hart, who stepped down from hosting the Academy Awards after a number of homophobic tweets by the star emerged.
“I was afraid you were going to ask me about that,” Chappelle said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Kevin Hart is a great comedian and I’m sorry he won’t be hosting the Oscars.”
Asked if he might step in to take over the hosting duties, Chappelle responded, “If they’re mad at Kevin, I think they’d be untenable if I did it.”
Overall, Chappelle looked back fondly on 2018, telling CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen that it was his “greatest single professional year” after putting out a series of Netflix comedy specials and starring in “A Star is Born”.
