John Boyega created a firestorm of controversy last night during an acceptance speech at the Screen Nation Film And Television Awards in London when he urged people to stop complaining about a lack of diversity in the entertainment industry.

While accepting the award for best male actor at the ceremony, which honours black actors in the U.K., Boyega stated: “To complain about what is going on is not going to benefit us. Be the change you want to be. Be the change, and continue and focus.”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsFollowing the controversy that erupted over his remarks, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor took to Twitter to clarify, offering an apology: “Regarding my comments at the screen nation awards (just to clarify) I am not saying that complaints are invalid or should not be heard,: he wrote, adding: “I am saying that words without action can’t help right now. I agree that we need to be heard but some do the talking and no work.”;
