According to Twitter, Christian Bale just won the entire Golden Globes show.
During Sunday’s broadcast, Bale accepted the Best Actor In A Comedy or Musical award for his role in “Vice”, but he thanked someone very unexpected.
In the critically acclaimed film, Bale plays Dick Cheney, George W. Bush’s hand-pick as his Republican running-mate during the 2000 U.S. presidential election – and of course he became Vice President.
“Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role,” Bale joked of his transformation into Cheney.
He then thanked his “geezer” director Adam McKay, “[McKay] said, I’ve got to be somebody who can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody,'” he said.
Adding, “So he went, ‘Oh, that’s got to be Bale.”
Bale beat out Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Mary Poppins Returns”), Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”), Robert Redford (“The Old Man & The Gun”) and John C. Reilly (“Stan & Ollie”) with his second Globe win.
Cheney’s daughter Liz Cheney, a sitting member of the U.S. Congress, responded to Bale calling her father Satan, bringing up his 2008 arrest for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister.
Twitter loved every second of Bale’s speech, though:
